Today, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director, Randeep Guleria terming the decline in Covid cases as a small window of opportunity, calls for a public-private partnership for the rollout of mass vaccination drive in the nation. Guleria’s statement came at the AIMA event where he said that vaccine is the only weapon to have mass immunity and reduce the fatality rate and hence a mechanism is needed where the public and private sector actually start rolling out the vaccine on a large scale.

He further added that healthcare should not be only considered as a service sector rather it should be put at the center-stage. He also noted that there is a need to gradually start opening up in order to immune the mass. He also noted that the pandemic has made us learn and there should be more emphasis on becoming self-reliant in the healthcare sector as it can push the economy. He said, “the country should aspire to become a patient hub for the world rather than a medical research hub.

During his address, he emphasized that vaccinating the front-line workers was an easy task as the numbers were known but the scenario is different when 27 crore individuals need to be a part of the drive. There is a need for a robust program in place where you have the list of people to be vaccinated, the AIIMS chief said. He further said that people need to be vaccinated soon, due to left out dosages in the first phase and on the other hand new variants coming up from different countries.
