Veteran leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Basavaraj Bommai was sworn in as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka after BS Yediyuurappa was relieved from office. Yediyurappa left office two days ago, amid speculations of distress amidst the BJP’s state unit. Bommai is the most suitable candidate after Yediyurappa for the position as he is extremely obedient to the central leadership and a close associate of Yediyurappa.
Basavaraj Bommai arrived at Raj Bhavan for the oath-taking ceremony around 10.30 am. He was accompanied by BS Yediyurappa for the event. He also met BJP observer and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Bengaluru.
The position was handed over to Bommai by the BJP High Command a day after Yediyurappa turned in his papers. Bommai vowed to work for the welfare of the poor and lead a “pro-people”, specifically a “pro-poor people” governance, in his post-election statement.
“I will chair a meeting of the cabinet later today,” the newly-elected chief minister said, “After that, I will hold a meeting with senior officers to review the Covid-19 and flood situation in the state,” he added.
It is assumed that Yediyurappa’s resignation comes when the state is under heavy natural calamity after-effects with widespread floods and heavy rains in Karnataka. The Chief Minister-designate appreciated his predecessors’ handling of the situation under huge pressure of management amid floods and Covid-19 management.
Bommai also added that his predecessor BS Yediyurappa as his mentor and his vast experience would help him govern the state efficiently. He said that Yediyurappa is like a father figure to him and he wouldn’t have any issues working under his guidance and he will take notice of all his advice. He also said that Yediyurappa is a true democrat.
