Today, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has won the Bhowanipore by polls by 58,000 votes. Priyanka Tibrewal, the candidate from her opponent party BJP has accepted her defeat. Banerjee has earlier lost to Nandigram BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikary in the last Bidhansabha elections, after which she sought to hold the by-polls to the quickest, in order to secure her seat as the Chief Minister.

The Bhowanipore seat witnessed a turnout of 57% votes on Thursday, amidst tough tensions prevailing between the TMC and the BJP. The CM in her statement, has maintained, “I thank you all. Sisters, brothers, mothers, everyone from India. In 2016, I had seen that I got fewer votes in some wards. 46 percent of the population is non-Bengali and everyone has voted for me. I am happy that the people of Bhabanipur has shown faith in me. I am indebted to the people of Bhabanipur.”

Mamata has also greeted the supporters who were celebrating outside her house, following her victory. BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal has “gracefully” accepted her defeat, however, she has taken a jab on Banerjee, commenting that she had earlier promised a victory by 1 lakh vote, whereas, her margin sums up to only 50,000 votes.

Mamata’s brother Kartik has said, “There is no base of any other party other than TMC here. The party and Didi work for the people. We will form the government in Delhi in 2024.” As per the instructions of the Election Commission, Mamata Banerjee has directed her party leadership, not to allow any kind of post counting celebrations in Kolkata or other districts.

Transport minister Mr. Firhad Hakim has observed, “CM Mamata Banerjee has given instructions to all party leaders not to allow any victory procession or rally in Kolkata and the districts.”
