On Monday, president Ram Nath Kovind awarded Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal, Naib Subedar Sombir and Major Maheshkumar Bhure with the Shaurya Chakra. The awards were given away in a ceremony which took place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. In 2019, the Pulwama attack killed Major Dhoundiyal, wherefore the award was received by his wife Lieutenant Nitika Kaul and his mother Saroj Dhoundiyal.

Dhoundiyal was honored ahead of his contribution in the anti terrorist operations which led to the killing of five militants. A total of 200kg explosives were recovered from the deceased terrorists. Maheshkumar Bhure was awarded with the prestigious award for portraying valor during an anti insurgency operation which took place in Jammu and Kashmir back in 2018. The operation killed at least six terrorist commanders.

The statement which came along with Bhure’s award read, “Captain Maheshkumar Bhure cordoned the target house and achieved complete surprise, thereby trapping the terrorists. The terrorists attempted to break the cordon in darkness by lobbing grenades and firing indiscriminately. As they ran towards his position, the officer retaliated with deadly accurate fire at close range, thereby killing a terrorist and forcing the other terrorists to retreat back.” In 2019, a collision with the terrorists at Jammu and Kashmir, killed Naib Subedar Sombir. The operation led to the death of three terrorists among whom one belonged to the ‘A++’ category.
