Today, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated the sister-in-law of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata. She has been questioned in connection with a coal scam case. Menaka Gambhir had been questioned by the team for nearly three hours.
The CBI team also comprised of two female officers. Menaka is the sister of Banerjee’s wife Rujira. She had previously informed the CBI that she would be available for examination in connection with the case at her residence between 11 am to 3 pm on Tuesday. On Sunday, the CBI team had visited Abhishek’s residence to serve a notice to his wife for questioning in connection with the case. However, his wife was not there in the house.
Last year in November, the CBI had registered an FIR against the alleged kingpin of the pilferage racket Manjhi alias Lala, Eastern Coalfield Ltd General Managers Amit Kumar Dhar (of then Kunustoria area now Pandaveswar area) and Jayesh Chandra Rai (Kajor area), ECL Chief of Security Tanmay Das, Area Security Inspector, Kunustoria Dhananjay Rai, and SSI and security in-charge Kajor area Debashish Mukherjee. The investigation has resulted in a political rift between TMC and BJP.
Earlier, the Trinamool Congress had slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party by calling it ‘desperate’. “We are not scared of BJP’s new allies, CBI, and the ED. All BJP allies have left them. So the only loyal allies are CBI and ED. We will fight it out,” the TMC-party said. However, after today’s probe, the TMC is said to be nervous.
