NEW DELHI: Dr Suresh Jadhav, the executive director of Serum Institute of India (SII) said India will get a vaccine by March 2021 if regulators speed up the process as multiple manufacturers are working on it. He further said India is heading fast towards the development of vaccines, as two manufacturers already are in the phase-3 trial while one another in phase-2. Also, many more are joining the race.

Speaking at the summit of Vaccine Accessibility, Jadhav said Serum Institute of India could be manufacturing 700-800 million doses each year. The executive director of SII said the institute will be ready with approximately 60-70 million Vaccine doses before January 2021. He further said the vaccine will be out in the market after all clearance and only after then will more and more doses be produced.

Agreeing with Jadhav, Chief Scientist of WHO Dr Soumya Swaminathan said a vaccine against the deadly virus will be available by the second quarter of 2021. On the topic of herd immunity, Swaminathan said it is not a good idea to try to achieve herd immunity by letting the virus ruin the wild population. Globally 3.92 people have been affected by the infection and over 11.02 have succumbed.
