Ahead of the nationwide launch of Covid19 vaccine on January 16, the vaccine reaches the respective regional hubs on Tuesday. As many as 5.6 million doses of ‘Covishield’, developed by Serum Institute of India (SII) will be delivered to 13 cities today.
CEO of SII Adar Poonawalla said the first 100 million dose of Covishield will be provided by the Government at Rs 200, after which the price will hike to Rs 1000.
The first consignment of the vaccines rolled out of the Serum Institute of India facility in Pune early Tuesday and reached the National Capital, Delhi airport at 10 am.

On Tuesday evening, Covid vaccine ‘Covaxin’ developed by Bharat BioTech is all set to be dispatched from Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
The vaccine got the approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for Emergency use. The vaccine is India’s indigenous vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech and Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR) National Institute of Virology (NIV).
The first vaccine vials of Covishield reached Delhi’s Central storage facility at Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH), Tuesday afternoon. In order to safely transport the vaccine, Delhi police had formed a green corridor from the airport to the hospital. To carefully store the vaccine vials, a special cold storage facility has been created at RGSSH.
The vaccine Consignment also reached from SII Pune to Bengaluru. Karnataka health and medical education minister Dr K Sudhakar had earlier said that the state will get 7.95 lakh vials of Covid-19 vaccine in the first consignment.
For distribution of the vaccine vials to centres in cities and districts, the vials have reached Gujarat, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh where four days later the vaccination process will start for phase 1.
From 16 January, first phase of vaccine roll out in India will start. he government had on Monday placed orders in advanced commitments for over six crore doses of vaccines from SII and Bharat Biotech for inoculating three crore healthcare and frontline workers in the first phase.
Before the three temperature controlled trucks rolled out of SII Pune before 5 am towards Pune Airport, a ‘Puja’ was performed.
Vaccines are being transported to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati, Shillong, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Chandigarh.
