- · The commission’s decisions were followed by a poll panel restricting the LJP factions from using the name and party symbol
- · The restrictions came in light of the by-polls scheduled to be held in Bihar’s Kusheshwar Asthan and Tarapur on October 30
- · The LJP factions led by Chirag Paswan and Pashupati Nath Paras have been indulging in a feud regarding the control of the party since the beginning of this year
On Tuesday, Chirag Paswan and his uncle Pashupati Paras were allotted new party names and symbols by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The decision of the commission came ahead of the poll panel barring the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) factions from using the name and symbol of the party. The name Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and the electoral symbol of a helicopter were given to Chirag Paswan’s faction of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) by the ECI.
The faction of the LJP led by Union minister Pashupati Nath Paras has been allotted the name of Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party and an electoral symbol of a sewing machine by the commission. Both the factions were asked by the Election Commission to select between three symbols according to their preferences before 1 pm on October 4, and only then will they be allotted their respective symbols.
The factions of the LJP have been indulging in a tussle for the control of the party since the beginning of 2021. Chirag Paswan, the heir to the late LJP supremo Ram Vilas Paswan, was expelled from the party by his uncle Paras, who claimed that the party outfit at present was run by him. Chirag’s expulsion from the position of the party chief was accomplished by Paras with the aid of Prince Raj, Chandan Singh, Veena Devi, and Mehboob Ali Kaiser.
Paras’ recognition as the party chief was also given by Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla after the former met him. The party name and symbol were frozen by the Election Commission earlier this month, in light of the by-polls scheduled to be held in Bihar’s Kusheshwar Asthan and Tarapur, on October 30.
In its order which arrived on October 2, the Commission has mentioned, “Neither of the two groups led by Pashupati Kumar Paras and (the) other led by Chirag Paswan shall be permitted to use the name of the party Lok Janshakti Party and neither of the two groups shall also be permitted to use the symbol bungalow.”
