On Friday, the Election Commission announced that the by-poll to the Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal will be held on August 9. Last year on February 12, the seat was vacated by then TMC member Dinesh Trivedi as he said that he feels suffocated in the House because he was unable to do anything against violence going on in West Bengal.

Later, Dinesh Trivedi joined the BJP party. His term was scheduled to end in April 2026.

The commission stated that the notification for the by-election will be issued on July 22 while the poll would be held on August 9. After the polling ends, the counting for Rajya Sabha will be held on the same day. They added that the committee will adhere to the Covid-19 norms during the poll.

In May 2021, in view of the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country, the Election Commission had deferred certain proposed elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly seats. It had also deferred Legislative council polls due to the pandemic scenario.
