Today at 4:30 pm, the Election Commission will be announcing the schedule of upcoming Assembly elections in five states. These five states include West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Union Territory Puducherry. Previously on Wednesday, the EC had conducted a meeting to finalize the dates for the poll-bound states.

Sudip Jain, the Deputy Election Commissioner who in-charge of the West Bengal election will be traveling to Kolkata today. He will review and discuss the preparedness and updates of the state. As per sources, he will also conduct a series of meetings with district magistrates and police superintendents. “Sudip Jain will seek a detailed plan from each of the district administration about the deployment of central forces,” said an official.

However, due to the prevailing global pandemic, the EC will conduct elections in seven-eight phases in West Bengal. Back in 2016, the election was conducted in six phases. The recent violence in West Bengal has forced the EC to label 6,400 booths in West Bengal as ‘extremely sensitive booth’.

“The EC, after a preliminary investigation, has identified 6,400 booths as extremely sensitive. This is the highest among the four poll-bound states and a Union Territory,” a state election commission official added. Meanwhile, the terms of the Legislative Assemblies of these five states will come to an end either in May or June this year.
