On Friday, The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) received power from the government to convict the retired Allahabad High Court Judge Shri Narayan Shukla. Charges of corruption have been brought against Shukla. According to reports, Shukla accepted bribes to confirm an order to a private medical college which comes under government restriction.

A CBI official said, “The sanction to prosecute Shukla arrived Thursday evening. Investigations against him are complete and the process of charge sheeting him will begin now. The charge sheet will be filed soon.”

The CBI has earlier arrested the former Chhattisgarh High Court chief justice I M Quddusi for maintaining connections with the incident. The FIR against Shukla states the names of 6 others which also include BP Yadav, Prasad Yadav, and Sudhir Giri, who are the owners of the Lucknow-based medical college Prasad Education Trust (PET).

The government has earlier banned new admissions in the PET because of the lack of facilities there. After the college challenged the government’s decision in the Supreme Court, new dictates were issued, barring the college to take new admissions for 2017-18 and 2018-19 sessions. The college was also ordered encashment of Rs 2 crore ban guaranty. The hubbub instigated the PET owners to come to a settlement with Justice Quddusi and Bhawana Pandey.

It was ahead of this the Shri Narayan Shukla was contacted for obtaining a favorable order through illegal means. The FIR has confirmed that Quddusi and Yadav had a meeting with Shukla at his Lucknow residence on August 25 and “delivered the illegal gratification.”
