On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 28th National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) foundation day program. The program was addressed through a video conference and witnessed the participation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, NHRC chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, and minister of home affairs of India, Nityanand Rai.

At the event, PM Modi highlighted that Human Rights must be protected. While referring to the foundation day program, PM Modi stated, “The program is taking place at a time when India celebrates its fruits of independence. The inspiration and values of human rights in India are rooted in the history of the country’s struggle for freedom.”

Highlighting Mahatma Gandhi’s path of ‘ahimsa’, the PM further said that India struggled for the achievement of its rights for ages. The country fought against all evils as a state and society as well, at an hour when the world was engaged in the brutality of the Second World War.

According to the Prime Minister, India after gaining independence gave the issues associated with human rights a new ‘perspective’ and ‘vision’. He said that the very notion of ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ contributed to the essence of human rights, intending to circulate equal benefits to the citizens of India. As Narendra Modi referred to the present-day concept of human rights, he observed that some people are interpreting human rights according to their personal interests.

“Human rights are grossly violated when they are viewed with a political color, viewed through a political lens, weighed with the scales of political profit and loss. This kind of selective behavior is equally harmful to democracy,” said the PM. Modi has appreciated the laws made to provide required facilities to the differently-abled while speaking of the achievements of the para-athletes in the Tokyo Olympics.

Referring to the turbulent times of the Covid-19 pandemic, the PM has stated that the aged and the poor received direct financial help from the government. The government has introduced the “One Nation One Ration Card” card facility so that the migrant workers do not have to wander around for ration.
