On Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) mentioned that it looked forward to an early formation of the government in Iraq. In addition, it also hoped that the recent election will mark the beginning of a new phase towards stability in the Middle Eastern country.

Addressing the media, Sanjay Bhattacharyya, secretary to the government of India (GoI) in the MEA appreciated the people of Iraq for their will for a safer, inclusive, and prosperous nation. He added that despite the difficult economic and security situation and the continued threat of terrorism, the people expressed their will for a safer Iraq.

Sanjay was speaking at the UNSC Briefing on United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq. Condemning the assassination attempt on Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, Bhattacharyya said, “Terrorism and violence don’t have any place in a civilized society.”

Back on November 7, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an assassination attempt. The incident took place after drones targeted his residence in the capital city of Baghdad. Keeping in mind the election result, Bhattacharyya that it should be addressed through legal and peaceful means within the country’s constitutional framework.

Furthermore, Sanjay also spoke about the Baghdad-New Delhi friendship and said that the people-to-people ties and the multi-faceted bilateral relations between the two countries are very strong. It has also been assured that India will remain a willing partner of the new Iraqi government in its efforts to achieve economic recovery, peace, and stability.
