India Observes State Mourning Marking Respect To UAE Prez Sheikh Khalifa, Half-masts National Flag

India declared a one day of state mourning on May 14 after the demise of the United Arab Emirates President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Friday. On Saturday, the National Flag was flown at half-mast as the Government of India observes one-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the UAE President.

The Union Home Ministry issued a communication to all states and union territories mentioning that the Government of India has decided that there will be one day’s state mourning on May 14 throughout the country, as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary.

The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi tweeted, “India will observe 1 day of national mourning on May 14, as a mark of respect for the departed soul of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. His leadership and guidance, under which the India-UAE prospered, will be remembered forever.”

Sheikh Khalifa passed away on Friday at the age of 73. He was the eldest son of the UAE’s founder President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He came to power in 2004 in Abu Dhabi and became the head of the state. His half-brother Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan is likely to succeed him.
