On Thursday, officials reported that four more travellers from ‘at risk’ countries were tested positive for COVID-19 on their arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The official added that among 243 people, three individuals on an Air France flight that landed at the airport around 12 midnight were tested COVID-19 positive.

One other individual travelling with 195 others on a flight from London was detected to be infected with COVID-19. The samples have been sent to the National Centre for Disease Control for genome sequencing to determine if they have the new variant, Omicron, which has been categorized as ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization’.

Altogether eight people from “at-risk” countries have been tested positive for COVID-19 since stricter norms for international travellers were enforced on Tuesday midnight. The eight COVID positive passengers and two other passengers who exhibited “COVID like symptoms” have been admitted to the Lok Nayak Hospital, where a dedicated ward has been established for isolating and treating such patients.

In accordance with the Centre, the countries labelled as “at-risk” are European countries namely the UK, and South Africa, Brazil, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel. Considering the new norms, RT-PCR tests are mandatory for travellers arriving from the “at-risk” countries and they will be permitted to leave the airport only after the results come.

Furthermore, five per cent of the passengers reaching in flights from other countries will have to undertake the test randomly.
