Working for nearly a decade to protect Israel from rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, the officials of Israel have credited the Iron Dome for helping the country to maintain military supremacy over its neighbors.
Israel’s Iron Dome is an air defence system developed by the Israeli firms Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. They had taken financial and technical support from the United States in making the domes. The Iron Dome was selected as Israel’s missile defence system in 2007 when the Islamist group Hamas took over the Gaza Strip.
The system uses active radicand Tamir interceptor missiles to detect small high-speed flying targets and destroys them in the air. It perfectly explodes the missile’s warhead with perfect timing.
According to Israel Missile Defense Organization Head Moshe Patel that reported in Israel’s local media, up to January 2021, the iron dome had seized over 2,400 projectiles in the past decade. It also said that by launching each dome daily that costs almost 50,000 dollars, it has saved “hundreds of lives.”
The defense minister of Israel, Benny Gantz, said that the Iron Dome has already been tested in a range of complex scenarios and successfully intercepted and destroyed targets that simulate existing and emerging threats.
