Ex-Secretary of CM of Kerela M Sivasankar, who was arrested on Wednesday in the gold smuggling case after his anticipatory bail petition was declined by the High Court of Kerala, was remanded in the custody of Enforcement Directorate (ED) for a week on Thursday. In the remand report, ED said he was made the fifth accused in money laundering case in connection to gold smuggling case and he was fully aware of the activities of the main accuse Swapna Suresh in the Kerala Gold Smuggling case.

Sivasankar was said to have been detained from Ayurveda hospital where he was admitted for treatment on Wednesday. The agency said he was pretending to be ill to avoid grilling. Sivasankar was once a powerful bureaucrat who fell from grace after his name got linked in the gold smuggling case. As much as 30 kg of the yellow metal was seized by the customs from a package camouflaged as diplomatic consignment addressed to the UAE consulate.

ED had earlier claimed that there were attempts to bail the main accused out after the seizure of gold hidden in a bag camouflaged as diplomatic baggage that came to the UAE consulate in the state capital. Sivasankar has also been accused by the agency of helping Swapna Suresh in money laundering. A multi-agency team comprising NIA, ED, DRI, Customs and Income Tax is probing the case. Till now 32 people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Sivasankar told the court that he had been grilled for 90 hours and none could implicate him in the case. As per reports, it is being said that smuggling was going on for more than a year through the UAE consulate and as much as 400 kg gold is said to have been smuggled.
