Five districts in Kerala are on red alert as heavy rainfall struck the state on Saturday. An orange alert has been issued in at least seven other districts. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan summoned an emergency meeting in the evening to assess the situation while the state authorities have banned the nighttime movement in hilly areas of the state.

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in five districts of Kerala, namely Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. A red alert has been issued in these districts.

An orange alert has been issued in seven states namely Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. Orange alert signals ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’.
