Dominica announced that economic fugitive Mehul Choksi is a prohibited immigrant. Choksi is fighting a legal battle in the island country. Last week, Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal claimed that the police there cannot arrest him as he did not enter Dominica illegally and he is not a “prohibited immigrant”. But this declaration by the country counters Aggarwal’s claim.
The ministry of national security and home affairs of Dominica issued a notice, which said that on 25th May, Mehul Choksi was declared a prohibited immigrant. The police were also directed by the ministry to “remove him from the Commonwealth of Dominica” in keeping with the procedure laid out in Section 5(1) (1) of the Immigration and Passport Act.
On the same day, sending a separate notice to Choksi, the ministry informed him that he is not permitted to enter the country. The ministry has also instructed the police to “take all the necessary actions” to have him repatriated.
On 23rd May, Choksi had mysteriously gone missing from Antigua and Barbuda, where he lived since 2018 as a citizen. His lawyers claimed that Choksi was kidnapped from Jolly Harbour in Antigua and brought to Dominica on a boat.
Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank fraud case. He is connected with a legal battle to prevent his extradition to India.
India has presented evidence of the financial fraud of Choksi to Dominica and urged the island country to clear his deportation as it is extremely important.
