Three days after the Dominica high court of justice granted bail to Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi on medical grounds, on Thursday morning, Choksi reached Antigua and Barbuda in an air ambulance.
Choksi reached Antigua’s VC Bird International Airport in an air ambulance where he was received by the ministry of foreign affairs officials. According to the sources, he didn’t have any problem with immigration authorities. Dominican court has granted him a stay in Antigua for medical treatment until he is fit to travel back.
Mehul Choksi’s lawyer, Vijay Aggarwal said that Choksi had a safe return to his home in Antigua and did not face any issues while returning back. He added that Choksi is undergoing medical treatment. However, the tortures that he faced during his kidnap have affected him both psychologically and physically. Aggarwal stated that after tasting success in Dominica, the legal team is gearing up for a long-drawn fight in Antigua.
Choksi holds citizenship of Antigua from where he had gone missing on May 23. The next day, he was detained by authorities in Dominica after which his family members claimed Choksi’s abduction.
Choksi was a prohibited immigrant in Dominica, therefore India sought his deportation from Dominica directly. He is also facing charges for the same.
On May 28, an Indian team had flown to Dominica for his deportation but Choksi filed a habeas corpus in Dominica high court alleging abduction and torture. The allegations were rejected by the governments of India, Dominica, and Antigua.
