Bollywood had been blessed with few stars who left everlasting impressions, among them one had been Late actor Amrish Puri, played negative as well as character roles with the same ease. He was the master of his craft and well-convinced people by his brilliant work and hence, did approximately 450 films between 1967 and 2005.
Not only commercial but also arthouse films such as “Nishant”, “Manthan” and “Bhumika” marked his presence. He was the main part of commercial hits such as “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”, “Karan Arjun” and “Nayak: The Real Hero”. He is best remembered for his role as Mogambo in “Mr India”. He was an actor at par and so ventured into international Cinema by playing Mola Ram in Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom”, long before it became fashionable for Bollywood stars to foray into Hollywood.
In a recent interview, Boney Kapoor disclosed how the veteran actor was finalized for the immortal role of “ Mogambo” in Mr India. The hunt lasted for two months with no one to choose so the producer, writer Javed Akhtar and director Shekhar Kapur decided on Puri’s name. Amrish Ji was so excited about the role that he got a sketch made of his look complete with the wig, costume and accessories.
Bollywood tailor Madhav Agasti was promised that if he replicated the sketch, he would pay him to double the charging price. “He was so excited that he worked on his look with Madhav tailor and his make-up man Govind. While the dialogues, punch line was written in the script by Javed Sahab, his look added the chaar chaand in the personality of Mogambo,” the filmmaker said in a statement.
He won and was nominated for many movies. On 22 June 2019, Puri was honoured with a Google Doodle. Commemorating his 87th birthday, Google carried his picture and the accompanying text read as, “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again—and you might end up like Indian film actor Amrish Puri, who overcame an early setback on the way to fulfilling his big-screen dream.
