On Tuesday, following one of the worst prison riots of Ecuador due to gang rivalry, around 65 inmates have been declared dead. In the Western port city of Guayaquil, in Ecuador, 21 inmates were said to have been declared dead on Tuesday while another 33 in Cuenca and eight in Latacunga in the center of South American Country. The horrific incident took place as gangs fought to gain control of terrorists for drug trafficking in the country.

Family members waited outside, hoping for some information about their loved ones who had been locked up in the prison. Daniel Soria, who was waiting outside the Guayaquil said, “We want the death list given to us.” Further, she added, “We know that the problems are not over because everyone there has a phone and my husband does not call.” Soria said to a news agency that she heard from her husband last time when he had sent her a WhatsApp voice message saying, “They are going to kill me, grant me out of here!”

The authorities have been trying to regain control of the three prisons where the riot had broken. On the other hand, President of Ecuador Lenin Moreno held ‘criminal organizations’ responsible for the riots as they engaged in simultaneous acts of violence in various prisons. Patricio Carrilo, a police commander also described the situation as ‘critical’, and Interior Minister Patricio Pazmino described it as a “concerted action by criminal organizations to generate violence in penitentiary centers.”

Till now, it is being assumed that the riot took place after someone killed the leader of a gang in the prison located in Guayaquil. Two guns were also seized from the prison by the guards which were probably used to carry out the murder. Soria said, “Inside, it is like a market. There is everything: drugs, arms, even puppies. Everything is sold.”
