As per the laboratory, a study conducted by the US drugmaker, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is said to be effective against the new mutant variant found in the United Kingdom and South Africa. As per the reports of a leading news agency, the results of the study show that the vaccine has been effective against the N501Y mutation of the Covid-19 virus.

Along with the scientist of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Pfizer conducted the study and it is important to note the fact that the study has not been yet peer-reviewed. As of now, the vaccine has worked against 16 different mutations. One of Pfizer’s top viral vaccine scientists, Phil Dormitzer added, “So we’ve now tested 16 different mutations, and none of them have really had any significant impact. That’s good news. That doesn’t mean that the 17th won’t.”

Therefore, the finding can be limited as the study was conducted on blood samples that were taken from people who had been given the vaccine. Dormitzer stated that the new variant can be more transmissible that can make the virus escape the antibody neutralisation elicited by the vaccine. The top viral vaccine scientist of Pfizer also expressed concern over the new variant emerging from South Africa. He added that to know the efficacy of the vaccine, they will be running additional tests.

In the month of December 2020, when the first case of the new UK variant of Covid19 emerged, CEO Ugur Sahin of BioNTech, the man behind the Covid19 vaccine ‘Pfizer’ stated that it is highly likely that the Pfizer vaccine will be efficient against the emerging mutant coronavirus strain, and if required the firm will be adapting it in six weeks’ time. He added that the new vaccine will be working against the new form of Covid19 as it shares 99% of the proteins with the previous iterations.
