Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘Azadi@75 – New Urban India: Transforming Urban Landscape’ Conference-cum-Expo in Lucknow. For the next three days in Lucknow, experts across the country are going to brainstorm on the new nature of the cities. In addition, the exhibition also aims to focus on the achievements of India in 75 years.
Addressing the event, PM Modi handed over the keys of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) houses to 75,000 beneficiaries in 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. He also interacted with the beneficiaries of the scheme. “We have handed over the complete freedom from the design to the construction of the houses to the beneficiaries,” he said.
Before 2014, he pointed out that there was no specific policy about the size of the houses. After 2014 when the BJP came to power, he mentioned that a policy was made where no houses will be smaller than 22 square meters.
Sources claimed that before 2014, the government had sanctioned just 13 lakh crore urban houses, and only 8 lakh were constructed. However, since 2014 he mentioned that the BJP has sanctioned over 1.13 lakh crore urban houses under PM Awas Yojana, and over 50 lakh houses have already been built and given to the poor.
Responding to the criticisms received by the Opposition, he stated that those who stayed in the slum have received a ‘pucca’ roof. “Under PM Awas Yojana about 3 crore houses have been constructed, and you can guess the cost of them,” he added. He also mentioned that in Diwali, there is a program to light 7.5 lakh diyas in Ayodhya.
Keeping in mind the hygiene, PM Modi lauded the Swachh Bharat Mission. Under this scheme, the government has managed to construct 60,000 domestic and over 6 lakh public toilets in the last 7 years. As a consequence, he added that nearly 70 percent of waste is being disposed of.
In the memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, PM Modi established the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Chair in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University. He expressed his confidence that the chair, will bring Vajpayee’s action, contribution, and vision in nation-building on the world stage.
