On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled his interactions with Padma Shri Awardee Biren Kumar Basak during this year’s Padma Awards ceremony which was organized at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in November 8. Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister thanked Basak, a saree weaver from West Bengal, for gifting him something, which he expresses, he greatly cherishes.
Sharing an image of the aforesaid interaction, PM Modi wrote, “Shri Biren Kumar Basak belongs to Nadia in West Bengal. He is a reputed weaver who depicts different aspects of Indian history and culture in Sarees. During the interaction with the Padma Awardees, he presented to me something that I greatly cherish.”
Padma Shri Awardee, Biren Kumar Basak presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a saree, with a garment featuring a design of PM Modi addressing a group of people. The Padma Shri Awardee is among the 119 recipients who were conferred with the Padma Awards this year. Of the 119 individuals, 102 received Padma Shri, while 10 and seven awardees received Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan respectively.
Biren Kumar Basak started his career in the 1970s with just Rs1. Nevertheless, today, his turnover is around Rs25 crore. Few of his clients include West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, cricket legend and BCCI president Saurav Ganguly and music legends like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Asha Bhosle, and Lata Mangeshkar.
In recent years, Padma Awards have been known as ‘People’s Padma’ as individuals from almost every walk of life can be nominated by the general public. In 2017, the Union government introduced a website for people to submit their nominations.
On August 9, the center-initiated nominations for the 2022 Padma Awards, along with the deadline for submission dated September 15. The recipients will be disclosed on Republic Day coming year.
