On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kushinagar International airport, in an effort to strengthen Buddhist pilgrimage circuits around the world. The inauguration of the airport was marked by the landing of a flight with a Sri Lankan delegation of more than a hundred Buddhist monks and dignitaries from Colombo (Sri Lanka).

Narendra Modi reached Uttar Pradesh today, for the inauguration of the airport and initiation of key projects. Kushinagar is one of the most important pilgrim spots for Buddhists. It is the final resting place of Gautama Buddha where he attained Mahaparinirvana after his death.

While addressing the event, the Prime Minister stated that the airport is a result of decades of hopes and expectations. He expressed, “My happiness is two-fold today. As curious about the spiritual journey, I’ve a sense of satisfaction. As a representative of the Purvanchal area, it is time for fulfillment of a commitment.”

Narendra Modi further noted that Indian airline SpiceJet is introducing a direct flight between Delhi and Kushinagar in the coming weeks. Along with PM Modi, Union minister of civil aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia, Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel, chief minister Yogi Adityanath and other dignitaries were also present at the ceremony.

Sri Lankan sports minister Namal Rajapaksa hailed PM Modi’s “gesture” of inviting Sri Lankan airlines to be the first international carrier at Kushinagar airport. He said, “It is a great gesture of PM Modi and especially inviting Sri Lankan airlines to be the first international carrier to land at Kushinagar International Airport.”

The Kushinagar International Airport has been developed at a cost of around Rs 260 crore and will enable domestic and international pilgrims to visit the Mahaparinirvana sthal of Lord Buddha. The endeavour will link the Buddhist pilgrimage holy sites around the world and will also strengthen the investment and employment opportunity in the area. Furthermore, the United Cabinet gave its approval for affirming Kushinagar airport in Uttar Pradesh as an International airport in 2020.
