PM Narendra Modi’s Visit To Europe: Hope On The Horizon For Ending Russia-Ukraine War

The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hope on the horizon for the Russia-Ukraine War. No one country other than India in the entire World is well poised to end the Russia-Ukraine War

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness” quoted Desmond Tutu. As the Russia-Ukraine War ravages fiercely into its third month and shows no sign of abating or ending, the World is now tense about the ending of this war. Speculations of nuclear or chemical weapon usage ending this war are on the rise, a stark reminder of how World War II ended.

During World War II, as the war was into its sixth year, and Japan was showing no signs of relenting, the USA dropped an atom bomb each on Hiroshima & Nagasaki cities of Japan on 06 August 1945 and 09 August 1945 respectively. This resulted in Japan surrendering on 15 August 1945 and World War II ended on 02 September 1945.

With enormous money and arms being pumped into Ukraine by USA and NATO, the war which Russia had initially planned to wrap up within a week of its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, is now seeing Ukraine putting up fierce resistance.

Added to the woes of this prolonged war is the faulty planning of the Russians. There are two main reasons for this prolonged war between the two warring nations. One is the timing of the offensive in Ukraine and the other is the armored warfare of Russia not succeeding swiftly.

Russia launched the offensive on Ukraine on 24 February 2022 when winters were still at their peak in eastern Europe. Thus, with snow covering the entire ground in Ukraine and the ground being boggy, the Russians had no option but to keep the movement of their troops and tanks on the metalled roads.

In armored warfare, emphasis is on the dispersed movement of tanks on large frontages across the country so as to maximize their effect and efficacy. However, this was not possible due to the snow in Ukraine, hence these tanks became sitting ducks for the Ukrainian soldiers who are equipped with the latest US-made Javelin, the British made NLAW anti-tank missiles and the Turkish TB2 Bayraktar drones.

The Russian theatre commander in Ukraine was changed on 10 April 2022 and General Alexander Dvornikov took over as the new theatre commander, a clear indicator that the Russian offensive was not going at the desired speed and planning. On April 13, 2022, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the USA expressed the fear of Russia using nuclear weapons in the war.

On April 20, 2022, Russia successfully flights tested the RS-28 Sarmat ICBM that is capable of carrying 15 nuclear warheads, President Vladimir Putin proudly claimed that it can strike any target in the world as it has a range of 18,000 kilometers.

The failed visit of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Russia on April 26, 2022 and the next day to Ukraine has failed to end the war as Russia does not trust the United Nations. Earlier talks in Turkey between Russia and Ukraine haven’t yielded any results. The efforts of Israel to end the war too have been in vain.

Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia during his visit to India on March 31-April 01, 2022 expressed willingness for India to act as a mediator to end the Russia-Ukraine War.

Dymtro Kuleba, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine on March 31, 2022, spoke of its readiness in asking India to mediate in ending the war.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-nation European tour to Germany, Denmark and France from May 02-04, 2022 is of special significance as these three nations are important and influential members of NATO. By now, it is well known that NATO is one of the principal reasons for this war.

This visit of PM Narendra Modi to Europe as the war is well in its third month and efforts by all others to end this war have miserably failed, the spotlight is now on India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In this war, India has undisputedly emerged as a world leader which can be gauged from the fact that leaders from almost all influential countries in the world like the USA, China, Russia, and the UK visited India from mid-March to mid-April 2022. A similar feat was not seen in any country in the world during this period.

It is now up to Germany, France and Denmark to leverage the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to their countries to use the good relations that India has with Russia and Ukraine and the trust that these two warring nations repose in India, in ending this war.

The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hope on the horizon for the Russia-Ukraine War. No one country other than India in the entire World is well poised to end the Russia-Ukraine War. As the famous quote goes “Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity”.
