The awards presented by Kovind stand in accordance with, “Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a Garbage Free India under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0,” as stated by the press release presented by the ministry. The press release further stated, “The Mahotsav will also pay tribute to the sanitation workers by recognizing top-performing cities under the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge earlier initiated by the Ministry.”

The Swachh Survekshan began earlier in 2016 and has expanded further to become the largest urban cleanliness survey in the world today. The MoHUA stated, “The award ceremony will salute the effort of the top-performing cities under the ‘Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge’, an initiative introduced last November by MoHUA to ensure safety and dignity of sewer and septic tank cleaners and eradicating the menace of hazardous cleaning from the urban sanitation lexicon.”

The award ceremony will take place in the presence of Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, MoS Kaushal Kishore and others. The ‘Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge’ is an initiative which was launched by the Centre last year, with the aim of cleanliness in the cities.
