On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi along with her party members was detained as they attempted to visit the families of the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Commenting on the matter, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted in support of his sister saying, “The person you have Kept in custody is fearless – she is a true Congressi and will not give up.”

Priyanka Gandhi was arrested in Sitapur while she was on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people including four farmers, a local journalist, and others were killed in a violent clash during farmers’ protest. Akhilesh Yadav and several other party leaders were also arrested on the same day.

On Tuesday, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi through Twitter why the person behind the killing of four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri has not been arrested yet while she has been under “detention for the past 28 hours” without any order or FIR. She wrote, “@narendramodi ji your government has detained me for the past 28 hours without any FIR or order. Why the person who ran over farmers has not been arrested yet?”

She further shared a video on her social media platform which displayed a group of protesting farmers being mowed down by an SUV. Furthermore, the Congress supporters are continuing their demonstrations outside the PAC guest house in Sitapur where the party leader is allegedly detained.

Earlier, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) issued a statement, where it claimed that one of the four farmers who died during the clash was killed by Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni’s son, while others were allegedly run over by the vehicles of his convoy. The UP Police has filed a case against Teni’s son but no arrest has been executed as yet.
