On Friday, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had an hour-long telephonic conversation with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin after months of refusing direct contact. However, according to the reports, the discussion did not involve anything related to solving the Ukrainian crisis. This is the first time the top leaders of the two nations since Russia attacked Ukraine.

As the statements issued by a senior official stated on Friday that US defence minister Austin believed that this discussion played an important role in keeping the communication open, but there was no discussion on the resolution of any ‘acute issues’ related to Russia’s invasion to Ukraine.

Over the last few months, the Pentagon officials are continuously trying to communicate with the Russian government but the leaders were refusing to take the calls from Mr. Austin and Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Furthermore, the US defence minister appealed to the Russian counterpart for the ‘immediate ceasefire in Ukraine’ and stressed the vital significance of maintaining the lines of communication.
