Today, the Supreme Court came down heavily on Farm unions for casting denigration on the court-appointed panel of experts. In its verdict, the apex court said that it’s the choice of the farmers to appear before the committee. However, the farmers union has no right to defame the committee formed by the Supreme Court, it added. “The farmers union must desist from maligning experts just because they had some opinion in the past. And over and above cast aspersions on SC,” it added.
The eight farmers union have been represented by lawyers, Dushyant Dave and Prashant Bhushan. The lawyers informed the court that the farmers union would not appear before any SC-appointed committee. “The farmers would not participate in any further proceedings,” they added. The SC had appointed a committee comprising of four experts to review the Farm Bills. On this, the farmers had raised their doubts about the possibility of bias among the panelists. After this, they refused to attend any further proceedings.
Reportedly, a few experts of the committee supported the Farm Bills. They favored the contentious Farm laws. Meanwhile, the bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde said that the farmers must desist from maligning experts. He further added that no one had the right to call the experts in the committee biased or prejudiced. “How do you say the members of the committee are biased and hence disqualified? Do the members have any adjudication power to make them biased?”
Meanwhile, the court has issued a notice to the farmers union to fill up the vacancy that has to arise because of the resignation of BS Mann. It has requested Bhushan to counsel the farmers to work towards the resolution of the issue.
