Today, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar slammed and criticized Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led union government. In a rally in Nagpur, the NCP leader stated that those involved in sending the former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh to jail will have to pay the price. He pointed out that Deshmukh was innocent.
Addressing the public, Pawar questioned the whereabouts of former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh. Param is the officer who had made multiple allegations against Deshmukh. Recalling Singh, Pawar mentioned that he had a conversation with him, where Singh said Deshmukh had given him instructions to extort money. “I asked him (Param) if he carried out the instructions. He said he didn’t. I am unable to understand what Deshmukh’s crime was if his so-called instructions were not carried out in the first place,” Sharad said.
Hitting out at the BJP, Pawar accused the party of spreading propaganda against Deshmukh. He claimed that before the investigation was completed, he had stepped down as home minister. “We will not keep quiet. You (BJP) have sent him (Deshmukh) behind bars and you will be made to pay the price of every day and every hour,” Pawar added.
Earlier, Param had claimed that Deshmukh had instructed him to extort Rs. 100 crore from businesses and other establishments. He made the statements soon after he was transferred as Mumbai police commissioner following the mysterious discovery of explosives near Mumbai’s Antilia. Presently, Anil Deshmukh is in judicial custody.
Back on Wednesday, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court had declared Param Bir Singh a proclaimed offender in connection with the extortion case.
