On Saturday, Congress president Sonia Gandhi slammed the G23 leader who inquired about the party’s functioning and recent decisions. While addressing the Congress Working Committee meeting, she expressed that she has always appreciated frankness and that there is no need to speak to her through the media.
In what is looked like a clear snub to the discontented senior members who questioned the party’s decision-making process, apparently stating that while Sonia Gandhi is the interim president, it is Rahul Gandhi and others who are taking key decisions, Gandhi stated, “I am if you will allow me to say so, a full time and hands-on Congress President.”
She further noted that it is the younger colleagues, who have taken the “leadership role” in taking party’s policies and programs to the people, a reminder while the seniors have been asking for changes, the young leaders including Rahul Gandhi, have taken the road. Nevertheless, she did not mention any senior members.
The Congress President remarked that in the last two years, a large number of her colleagues, particularly the younger ones, have taken on the leadership roles in taking party policies and programs to the people, whether it is the agitation of farmers, provision of relief during the pandemic together with emphasizing on the issues of concern to youth and women, atrocities on Dalits, Adivasis and minorities, price rise, and the destruction of the public sector.
She added, “Never have we let issues of public importance and concern go unaddressed. You are aware that I have been taking them up with the Prime Minister as have Dr. Manmohan Singh and Rahul Ji. I have been interacting with like-minded political parties regularly. We have issued joint statements on national issues and coordinated our strategy in Parliament as well.”
When the meeting focused on discussing the current political situation, she urged the members to have a free and honest discussion. The Congress President noted that only the collective decision of CWC should get communicated beyond the four walls of the room.
