JK Rowling the author of the famous witchcraft series was born on July 31, 1965. 

Coming to her pen name, the letter K stands for Kathleen her paternal grandmother. The publisher had requested her to add the letter K in her name. In 1998,  the book was published in the US by Scholastic under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The real name of the author is Joanne. J K Rowling which is her pen name is one of the best-selling authors in the world. In fact, when she was young she would sit and copy words from books without knowing the exact meaning of the word. Unbelievably, at the age of six JK wrote her first book known as Rabbit followed by a novel at only eleven years old. The novel was about seven cursed diamonds and the people who owned them. 

In 2001, Warner Bros. released the film based on her first book followed by six more book adaptations. After the fame she got from her Harry Potter series, the author had to disguise herself in order to go out without being recognized to purchase her wedding dress. In the same year, she got married to Dr Neil Murray. It took her almost five years to plan about Harry Potter. In 1990, Joanna got the idea of Harry Potter while sitting on a delayed train from Manchester to London King’s Cross.  She used to write her ideas on old scraps of paper.

In the year 2011, she was announced as the first female billionaire novelist. However, she was removed from Forbes’s list after donating £100 million to a charity. JK Rowling has won many honors and awards including The Robert F Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award 2019, Freedom of the City of London 2012, The Edinburgh Award 2008, Blue Peter Gold Badge 2007, and many more. In 2016, she made her screenwriting debut with the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was an extension of the Wizarding World which was released in November 2016.

She revealed that her favorite chapter from the entire Harry Potter series is Chapter 34 of Deathly Hallows. The King’s Cross station in the series has a special significance in her life. Rowling had applied to study at Oxford University but she got rejected and ended up studying French at the University of Exeter. She had a habit of reading books a lot that she clocked up a fine of £50 for overdue at the university library. She knew that her knowledge of classics would one day help her to create spells in the Harry Potter series. 

After completing her studies she moved to London and worked in a series of jobs including as a researcher at Amnesty International. After that, she moved to northern Portugal to teach English as a foreign language. In 1992, she got married to Jorge Arantes and in 1993 had a daughter, named Jessica. However, the marriage was short-lived and ended in 1993. She returned back to live in Edinburgh with her daughter and a suitcase containing the first three chapters of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

She started teaching in the city schools and also continued her writing during her free time. Rowling had sent the first three chapters to various literary agents. In June 1997, her book was first published by Bloomsbury Children Books.

Due to the global pandemic, JK Rowling along with her Wizarding World partners launched the Harry Potter At Home initiative to entertain children. In May, she announced another initiative to help families in lockdown. The Ickabog, the story for younger children serialized for free online. It will be published in November 2020. The earning from the book would be donated to help the vulnerable groups across the globe who have been affected due to the global pandemic.
