On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 152nd birth anniversary, United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres paid tribute to India’s ‘Father of the Nation’. He encouraged that the world should heed his message of peace and usher in a new era of trust and tolerance.

Antonio Guterres’s tweet in tribute to Mahatma Gandhi reads, “Hatred, division, and conflict have had their day. It is time to usher in a new era of peace, trust, and tolerance. On this International Day of Non-Violence-Gandhi’s birthday- let’s heed his message of peace and commit to building a better future for all.”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in the Porbandar town of Gujarat. He adopted a non-violent resistance and was at the forefront of the freedom struggle against colonial British rule with utmost patience, which led India to achieve its independence in 1947.

Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Bapu, earned accolades across the world for his belief in ‘Swaraj’(self-governance), and ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence). Globally, his birth anniversary is celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. Multiple events are organized in India and across the world to mark the occasion.
