The UN Security Council is likely to chair a new public meeting on Thursday concerning the Russia-Ukraine war in Ukraine. As per diplomats, the meeting will take place in light of the continuing deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

According to reports, the meeting is demanded by France and Mexico, who have requested a briefing from the UN Department of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This will be the 16th meeting chaired by the Security Council since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

The meeting comes at a time when the United States is accelerating its arms deliveries to war-torn Ukraine. The U.N. Security Council meeting is seen as an attempt by the western states to maintain pressure on Russia, which as a permanent member holds the power to bar measures it disapproves of. Meanwhile, the Russian forces are continuing to shell the port city of Odessa.
