Today, the UP CM Yogi Adityanath went to Aligarh Muslim University to assess the present condition of Covid-19 in the university as due to the new Covid-19 variant, 50 staff members including current and retired, succumbed by the infection.
In the last 20-25 days, AMU’s 2 school teachers, 15 faculty members, 15 staff members and 25 retired teaching faculty members have died due to Covid-19. To the director of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Balram Bhargava, Vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor wrote to urge him for investigation if new Covid-19 variant was circulating in the location of the AMU campus, that is the civil lines area of Aligarh.
On Wednesday, MP of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Kunwar Danish Ali also wrote to Prime Minister Modi urging him to discharge a Central team to help combat the “virus variant” creating havoc in AMU.
Faizul Hasan, the former president of AMU Students’ Union demanded a high-level probe into the deaths. The AMU administration faced heavy criticism due to the deaths.
On the other hand, at AMU affiliated, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), there is a shortage of doctors, which has spread panic around the campus. In the last 3-4 weeks, Prof Shadab Ahmad Khan, the head of medicine at JNMC died in Covid.
However, JNMC principal Prof Shahid Ali Siddiqi has rejected all the allegations about negligence. On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh registered 18,125 fresh Covid-19 cases with 329 deaths.
