On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh government agreed to appoint a former high court judge from another state to supervise the ongoing probe into the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, where nearly eight individuals were killed in October. The state government has now asked the top court to suggest a name of a judge to supervise the investigation.

Previously, the Supreme Court ordered the state to appoint a former high court judge and suggested names of Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain and Justice Ranjit Singh to monitor the investigation, disfigured by the allegation of negligence.

The Court noted, “It needs one more days’ time as it is considering former Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Rakesh Kumar Jain or others.” The court has also asked the state to include some more senior police officers in the Special Investigation Agency (SIT).

Around four farmers and a journalist were among those who were killed on October 3 near the Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh. Agitated farmers claimed that Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son, Ashish Mishra was inside the vehicle when the incident occurred. On the other hand, Ajay Mishra and his son rejected any wrongdoings.

As yet, the police have detained nearly 13 accused, including Union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, in connection with the case. In addition, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) is looking forward to strengthening the agitation against farm laws and is formulating plans to conduct countrywide protests to mobilize farmers against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The farmers from Punjab and Haryana have been demonstrating against the three-farm legislation since November 2020. The apex court in January 2021, stayed the laws, thereby blocking its implementation.
