On Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused Congress of trying to “emulate” the former. The accusations came ahead of Congress announcing a 40 percent reservation of the total tickets for women in the upcoming elections of Uttar Pradesh. The TMC is a tweet that has stated that the party was the first to make a 40 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.

The tweet stated, “Under the visionary leadership of @MamataOfficial, AITC has shown the way to ensure increased participation of women in politics, in this country. We’re the first to give 40 percent seats to women in LS elections. Amid such dire times, @INCIndia is understandably trying to emulate and one can only hope that is genuine and not just tokenism. If they are to be taken seriously, they must give the same percentage of seats to women in states other than UP as well.”

In the eastern part of the state, the party ensured 17 women candidates out of 42 two years ago. TMC made a narrow victory with 22 seats, whereas the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 18, the rest of the seats were won by Congress. The women representatives of the party in the lower house include Mahua Moitra, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Mala Roy, Satabdi Roy, and others.

Moreover, Mamata Banerjee herself stands to be the only woman chief minister throughout the country at present. The announcement of reservation of 40 percent seats for women candidates was made by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday, in a press conference which was held in Lucknow. She has further emphasized the fact that the decision has been taken to ensure women’s safety in the state and applications for contesting will be accepted till November 15.
