On Saturday, nearly 17 American Christian missionaries and their families were kidnapped by gang members in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince. The incident took place as the missionaries were leaving an orphanage in the crisis-engulfed Caribbean nation.
Sources revealed that the members were kidnapped from a bus that had headed to the airport to drop off some members of the group before continuing to another destination in Haiti. The spokeswoman for the US state department in Washington, Jennifer Viau informed that they are investigating the matter. However, there has been no comment from the US embassy in Haiti.
Talking to the media, a spokeswoman for the Haitian police mentioned that she was seeking information on the issue. The report did not give details on the missionaries or their church.
Due to a surge in gang violence, it has directly impacted the economic activity. Violence spiraled after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July and an earthquake in August that killed over 2,000 people.
