Monu Mukherjee was a familiar face of the Bengali Film Industry, a critically accredited actor with an organic performance delivery, in short, a veteran has passed away at the age of 90. As per sources, he was suffering from Cardiac issues and died from a heart attack. He was born as Sourendranath, and popularly known as Dak. He started his career with the film ‘Neel Akasher Neechey’ directed by Mrinal Sen. Other famous directors under whom he acted was Satyajit Ray and Ronand Joffy. His role as Machhli Baba is the 1979 movie Joy Baba Felunath is evergreen. 

Born in 1930 to the father Amarendrnath Mukherjee, who was also involved in Calcutta Theatre, Monu Mukherjee was among the oldest actors in the world who actively took part in major and minor roles. His fascination with acting first started at a very young age when he played the role of a wife in a neighborhood club play. His fascination took him to the field of a prompter in the year 1957 at Srirangam Theatre.

Onwards to that, he was the part of many such theatres like Sarkarina, Sujata Sadan, Minerva, Star Theatre, and others. He was also a trained Tabla Player as he learned the art under Krishnakumar Ganguly. From 1959 to last released 2018, Monu Mukherjee has been an integral part of the Bengali Film Industry. His confrontation roles, comedy, natural expression, and even enigmatic roles have awed the audience for almost 60 years. The famous movies he has been a part of are- Neel Akasher Neechey, Shesh Theke Suru, Ashani Sanket, Safed Jhoot, Joy Baba Felunath, Ganashatru, Desh, Patalghar, Janatar Adalat, Holud Pakhir Dana, Goynar Baksho, and many more.

The Bengali film industry has flooded their social media handles with tributes. West Bengal Pictures of which he was a part, Saswata Chatterjee, Rudranil Ghosh, Atanu Ghosh, and others all have shared their heartfelt goodbyes to their favorite Monu Da. The Chief Minister of Bengal also tweeted, “Saddened at the passing away of veteran theatre and film actor Manu Mukherjee. We conferred on him the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tele-Samman Awards 2015. My condolences to his family, colleagues, and admirers.”
